My Story…
This year, I’m running the Run Jen Run 5K with a heart that is fuller—and stronger—than ever.
Many of you know parts of my story, but this race feels like a meaningful moment to share why this cause is so personal to me.
In 2011, we lost my mom to metastatic breast cancer. A few years ago, I learned that I carry the BRCA2 gene mutation, which significantly increases my risk for breast and ovarian cancer. As a mom of young kids, I made the decision to delay preventative surgeries. Then, after my annual screening MRI in December 2024, I was diagnosed in January 2025 with Stage 1 invasive ductal carcinoma.
What followed was a year I never would have chosen, but one that showed me the depth of love in my community as so many stepped up to care for me and my family. I had a double mastectomy in February, four rounds of chemo from March through May, and another surgery in July to complete reconstruction and remove my ovaries to reduce my future cancer risk.
I don’t always feel connected to the word “survivor.” But I do feel deeply grateful. Grateful for early detection. Grateful for incredible medical care. Grateful for friends, family, and colleagues who showed up in ways big and small. And grateful for running—which gave me a place to put my fear, my stress, and ultimately, my hope.
On March 7, I’ll run my first marathon. And just 2 weeks later, I’m excited to “fun run” the Run Jen Run 5K as a celebration of everything this past year has taught me about resilience, perspective, and community.
I’m using this race to raise funds for breast cancer patients who need financial support during treatment. Because while a diagnosis brings enough emotional and physical weight, money should be the last thing someone has to worry about when they’re fighting for their health.
If you feel led to give, I would be so grateful. And if you’ve supported me in any way this past year—meals, messages, prayers, childcare, check-ins, miles logged together—please know how thankful I am that you have been part of this journey.
Thank you for being in my corner. I’m running this one with all of you.
